What¡¯s New for 2011?
FUNDING FOR THE 2011 FESTIVAL: This is a very difficult time for non-profits who depend on government grants for their survival. Many societies have already closed their doors for lack of funding. We are in the same boat as the rest of B.C.¡¯s Arts & Culture sector. Going into 2011, our options were either to discontinue the festival or to increase entry fees to cover the loss of government subsidies. We have decided to continue offering the festival with the hope that things will turn around in the next year or two. Please know that these fee increases are temporary and will be reduced as soon as new sources of funding can be secured. We are committed to making the Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival accessible for everyone. We¡¯re actively seeking sponsors to help subsidize schools and individuals who want to participate but are struggling financially. In the meantime, if you or your school group is facing hardship but want to participate in the festival, let us know and we will do our best to find a patron for you.
ADMISSION TO THE FESTIVAL: Fewer and fewer people are carrying cash these days and we¡¯ve noticed a significant decrease in our donations at the door over the past few years. For 2011, we are collecting the price of admission for guests of the performer as part of the registration process. Participants can bring an unlimited number of guests for a very low charge. The cost per class is $5.00 for individuals, $10.00 for chamber groups or small ensembles and $25.00 for bands, choirs and orchestras.
ADULTS ONLY CLASSES: In every discipline now, we are offering competitive and non-competitive classes for adults 19 years of age and older. These sessions will be scheduled during the evenings or on Saturdays. We hope this encourages more adults to participate and learn from our fabulous adjudicators ¨C and from each other.
OTHER CHANGES IN CLASSES: Some of the age specifications and class descriptions have been changed to reflect those offered by Performing Arts BC and Musicfest Canada. We are the last regional festival of the season and have little time to submit our delegate lists to these provincial and national competitions. These changes will help to reduce any errors caused by the shortage of turnaround time.
